As you know, there are many factors that determine the effect of COVID-19 on humans. Age and the presence of chronic diseases are mostly looked at to estimate the risk. Vaccines for different purposes, it is known that having had some diseases before and some factors that make the immunity stronger can be advantageous in fighting the virus. However, until now, no criteria have been put forward to reveal exactly how individuals will be affected by the virus.

Health Sciences University Medical Biochemistry Specialist Assoc. Dr. With a new study, Fatih Özçelik found a way to determine how severely COVID-19 will be passed on by infected people. The study published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, on this subject, the ‘produced by the immune system’ isohemagglutinins‘ as a criterion.

By measuring the isohemagglutinins produced by the immune system, the severity of the disease can be predicted

Factors that have been looked at to date to predict how hard a person will contract COVID-19 and how severely they will outgrow the disease chronic diseases, organ failures, age and inadequate immune system exists. However, these are only estimations and none of them help to measure the situation exactly. However, there is nothing that can be measured to understand how difficult the disease will be.

Assoc. Dr. Fatih Özçelik has revealed exactly this with his new work. Focusing on isohemagglutinins naturally produced in the body by the immune system. Gastroenterology specialist Assoc. Dr. Alpaslan Tanoğlu and Anesthesiologist Dr. Bulent Baris Guven also contributed. Özçelik explained the aim of the research with these words:

“At the beginning of our research, we thought we could predict the severity of COVID-19 disease by measuring the activity of natural killer (NK) cells that can show a variety of biological activity and destroy infected or cancerous cells. However, the detection of NK-cells secreting high amounts of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) into the plasma during the cytokine storm observed as a result of an overreaction of the immune system in some patients prompted us to look for other searches. Then we decided to use IgM structured anti A1 and anti B isohemagglutinins, which are products of the innate immune system. In the study we conducted on a total of 286 cases hospitalized in the clinic or intensive care unit, We tried to predict blood cell-related immune events and disease severity using IgM structured anti A1 and anti B isohemagglutinins.

This research, as the first research on this subject in the world, revealed that there is a relationship between the early detection of people who cannot create an adequate immune response against the COVID-19 virus and the treatment of the disease. If such measurements become widely used, the condition of many patients at risk of dying from COVID-19 can be predicted, Countless lives can be saved by making certain supplements.
