When we say overclocking, processors are the first thing that comes to mind, then memory and display cards. Overclocking on integrated graphics is not uncommon. A YouTuber named SkatterBencher showed what the iGPUs in the newly released 12th generation Alder Lake CPUs can offer together with overclocking. The integrated GPU reached 2,378 MHz, providing over 60% higher performance across different workloads.

Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake K-series processors come with UHD Graphics 770 engine based on Xe-LP architecture and 10nm process. Alder Lake GT1 is at the heart of the UHD Graphics 770 solution and has up to 32 Execution Units (EU). We’re looking at a total of 256 ALUs, with 8 ALUs per Execution Unit.

The UHD 770 graphics engine has a base clock speed of 300 MHz, but the boost frequency varies depending on the processor model. For example, the Core i5-12600K and Core i7-12700K have iGPUs that can go up to 1,450 MHz and 1,500 MHz, respectively, while the iGPU integrated into the Core i9-12900K reaches up to 1,550 MHz.

SkatterBencher has boosted the integrated graphics in the Core i9-12900K to an impressive 2.3378 MHz, which is an increase of 53%. In this process, different methods have been tried for overclocking. Used ASUS’ Multi-Core Enhancement (MCE) feature, which is proven to be the most efficient and most aggressive method, maximizing power and current limits. At this point, XMP 3.0 has been increased to BCLK 116 to overclock the processor and iGPU.

The overclocked iGPU delivered over 40% performance gains across a wide variety of synthetic tesdollarser, with the difference reaching 61% in the Spaceship comparison using the Unity engine. On a real-world workload like HandBrake, we only saw a 15% performance boost. Apart from these, unfortunately, only two games were tested: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Final Fantasy XV.

The integrated GPU provides 49% higher performance in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, increasing frame rates from 52.79 FPS to 78.49 FPS. There was a 41% increase in Final Fantasy XV, but still no 30 FPS target was seen. Before moving on to the table, let me remind you that the UHD Graphics 770 has a power budget of 15W.
