Firmware developer 3MDEB, with Dasharo’s help, was able to add Coreboot support to MSI’s Z690-A Pro WiFi DDR4 motherboard. To sum up, Coreboot replaces the factory default UEFIs and BIOS with the promise of faster, more flexible and more secure firmware for your motherboard or laptop.
This support, added by 3MDEB, represents a rare case with Coreboot specifically integrated into a desktop motherboard. Coreboot is lighter and more feature-rich than software provided by OEMs. Thanks to its open source nature, many developers can work on Coreboot updates and improvements frequently. That’s why Coreboot promises a more streamlined and streamlined UEFI/BIOS experience compared to what OEMs can currently offer.
One of the biggest promises for end users is up to 70% faster boot times compared to OEM UEFI/BIOS. So, so to speak, pressing the power button allows you to see the operating system. Other features include security improvements and much more.
But Coreboot needs a firmware distribution network to work. This is where Dasharo comes into play. Dasharo is a company that specializes in developing software compatible with certain platforms. This company will integrate Coreboot’s firmware, additional features, and platform support for Intel FPS or AMD AGESA into a package that can be installed on the system. 3MDEB’s job was to port this firmware specifically to the Z690-A Pro WiFi and make it fully functional.
For now the open source BIOS is still in its infancy. But according to a tweet by Dasharo, a new version will be coming soon with display, USB and UEFI boot support. As we mentioned, the BIOS software is unofficial and prone to bugs.
