With the “iPhone 15”, which will be released in 2023, some news is circulating that iPhones will not have a SIM card slot. Shortly after this news broke out, MacRumors also anonymously reported that Apple was talking to major GSM operators in the US and advised them to prepare for eSIM-only smartphones that will be released in September 2022. Moreover, this information was confirmed by @dylandkt, who is known for his reliable Apple leaks shared on Twitter.
According to GSM Arena’s report, removing the physical SIM card slot from a smartphone has several manufacturing advantages. First, the SIM card slot removal and insertion mechanism will no longer need to be manufactured, and its absence will free up some space inside the phone. Fewer I/O units will also improve the production of the frame by simpler. Also, the absence of a SIM card slot will make it easier for the smartphone to keep water and dust away from its interior.
If the company removes the physical SIM card slot from the iPhone models it will release in the coming period, along with Apple’s removal of the headphone jack on iPhones and the adoption of MagSafe accessories in recent years, it will be one step closer to an iPhone without a port.
iPhones have supported eSIM for the past few generations, but there is also a physical nano SIM slot. The end of physical SIM card support will be a first for the company and the smartphone world.
