In the 4th week after the first dose in Scotland, it was determined that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine reduced the risk of hospitalization by 85 percent and the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine by 94 percent.
When the results of both vaccines were combined, an 81 percent reduction in the risk of hospitalization was found among those aged 80 and over, one of the highest risk groups.
“The results are very encouraging and provide great reasons to be optimistic for the future. We now have nationwide evidence that vaccination protects against hospitalizations due to COVID-19,” said lead researcher Professor Aziz Sheikh. said.
In the study, the data for the period between 8 December and 15 February were examined. During this time, 1.14 million people (21 percent of the population) in Scotland were vaccinated.
