Griffith’s only accusation was conspiracy to violate sanctions laws. The Ethereum (ETH) developer now faces 6.5 years behind bars. His sentence is expected to begin on January 13.
Virgil Griffith is accused of opposing the regime!
Griffith was arrested by American law enforcement in November 2019 after giving a speech at the North Korean cryptocurrency conference. The North Korean hackers involved were accused of stealing more than $1.3 billion in crypto and cash. The Ethereum researcher was also found guilty of teaching the regime how to circumvent US sanctions with the help of Blockchain technology. The Justice of the United States claimed in her complaint that she was aware of the fact that Griffith’s speech would break the law. A maximum prison sentence of 20 years was initially expected for the developer.
