Just on the day the list of the world’s safest car brands was announced, Honda made a new statement about its innovative work in this area. Honda, which is among the brands most trusted by drivers, aims to prevent pedestrians and cars from having accidents by collaborating with Japan’s largest telecommunication company and Softbank .
Honda and Softbank, which announced that they entered into cooperation for the first time in 2017 , will enable cars to communicate with each other and also with pedestrians, with the new technology they will use. Based on standalone 5G technology , this project will utilize special core equipment and base stations . At the same time, ‘ from vehicle to everything ‘, which enables autonomous driving , cellular V2X technology will be used. Currently, the independent 5G base station in Takasu town, Hokkaido province, Japan, continues to be tested.
A warning will be sent to pedestrians’ mobile phones:
This technology, which is planned to be used, is classified in three different categories. The first of these covers ‘pedestrians visible to vehicles’ . A pedestrian entering the field of view of the camera inside the cars receives a warning via 5G directly to the mobile phone in case of a risk of collision . In this way, it is ensured that the pedestrian is removed from the road before a collision occurs.
The second category includes pedestrians out of sight of cars . In cases where this happens, communication is established between cars . For example; a vehicle coming from the left lane is warned by a vehicle driving in the right lane for a pedestrian that it cannot see due to a tree or any obstacle. At the same time, a warning is sent to the pedestrian’s mobile phone.
The third category covers situations where one of the cars does not have the technology to establish this communication . If we go from the previous example; The vehicle coming from the left lane cannot see the pedestrian and cannot communicate. In this case, the vehicle going from the right lane communicates with the pedestrian and sends a warning for the incoming vehicle. In this way, not only the car you are in , but also other cars are prevented from colliding with pedestrians. Honda shared that they aim to popularize this technology before March 31, 2022.
