The apps managed to trick users by loading the real Facebook login page. While executing a JavaScript command for this, cookies were also stolen from the authorization session. There are five malware variants in the mix, but they all use the same JavaScript code and configuration file formats to capture information.

Google says they have banned the developers of these apps from the store. On the other hand, while perpetrators will likely be able to create new developer accounts, this may not be a great deterrent. Google may need to scan for the malware itself to keep attackers out.

One question is how the apps managed to get so many downloads before they were taken down. Google’s highly automated scanning keeps many malware out of the Play Store. It’s thought that the subtlety of the technique may have helped fraudulent apps bypass these defenses and keep victims unaware of their Facebook data falling into the wrong hands.
