WordPress. com and Tumblr owner Automattic, Pocket C has become the new owner of the popular podcast app named asts. In the announcement, no details are given on how much this purchase is, but as part of Automattic, it is stated that Pocket Casts will continue to provide the features needed to enjoy the favorite podcasts.
Pocket Casts was released in 2010 and was sold to NPR and a bunch of other public media groups eight years later. The platform began monetizing in 2019 through a program called Pocket Casts Plus, which charges users monthly subscription fees for features like desktop app access and a standalone Apple Watch app.
Pocket Casts first went on sale in January after a board of public media members voted. The free-to-download app was losing money, and NPR reportedly lost $800,000 last year.
